With the widespread adoption of loudness standards in broadcast territories worldwide, video editors now have a new criteria to keep in mind when delivering content: loudness compliance.
Loudness standards require audio levels within a program to stay within a specified range, in order to provide the viewer with a more consistent and pleasant listening experience.
But it's about more than just having a program "sound good." Broadcasters risk significant fines and penalties, so they will refuse to air your mix if it does not meet the required specs.
When clients tell you that your mix doesn't comply, what they mean is that the audio levels are outside the acceptable range as defined by the loudness standard used in that territory.
This means that they could be above or below the acceptable LKFS level, above the acceptable True Peak level, or above the acceptable Short Term level.
These are all different kinds of measurements of level that can be monitored using specialized loudness meters (such the level meters in Insight, shown below).
Yet new standards are constantly being introduced, and existing standards refined. This results in a lot of moving targets. And in addition to keeping eyes on the levels, you'll likely need to create different mixes if you're delivering to multiple territories.
