How to choose presets in Ozone 7

Ozone 7 and Ozone 7 Advanced have a full set of professionally-designed presets to help you get started with your master.

Master with confidence

Whether you have years of experience mastering or are just starting to learn your way around the workflow, the presets in Ozone 7 and Ozone 7 Advanced let you work with confidence. Load Ozone onto your master bus, scroll through the preset options, and select the one that has the best results for your track. Then use that preset as a starting point to dial in your signature sound.

Ozone 7's presets library includes the best of presets from Ozone 5 and Ozone 6 to give you 30 All-Purpose Mastering presets, 21 Genre-Specific Mastering presets, and 19 Instruments and Busses presets. Ozone 7 Advanced includes ten additional new Advanced-only presets in each of those categories that utilize the new vintage modules in the signal chain.

For both the standard and Advanced versions of Ozone 7, we've included the Signature Greg Calbi Mastering Presets as part of the Ozone installation. 

Here are some of our favorites of Ozone 7's presets along with audio examples and where to find them within Ozone.

"Depth and Clarity" [Ozone Advanced preset]

An all Vintage processing preset designed to smoothly maximize high frequencies and detail. The preset brings added depth and clarity to your mix (so it's not just a clever name!) without sounding harsh, affected, or over the top.

Modules used: Vintage Compressor → Vintage EQ → Vintage Tape → Vintage Limiter

Where to find it: All-Purpose Mastering > Depth and Clarity

"Tight Trio"

Blending new and old-school processing, this preset has relatively few moving parts. It's perfect for acoustic instrument mixes that need extra coaxing to get them to gel as a cohesive and full-bodied master.

Modules used: Dynamic EQ → Dynamics → Vintage Limiter → Maximizer

Where to find it: Genre-Specific Mastering > Tight Trio

"Island Bass"

Designed to tighten up bass frequencies and let them reign supreme. This preset will keep the balance of the overall mix together and push it up to an appropriate mastering level.

Modules used: Dynamics → Dynamic EQ → Vintage Limiter

Where to find it: Genre-Specific Mastering > Island Bass

"Neo Soul" [Ozone Advanced preset]

This setting owes a large part of its sound to the Vintage Tape module in Ozone 7 Advanced. With only minimal EQ adjustment and Vintage Limiting on top of Tape, you get tight bass and crisp highs without sounding harsh, as well a better cohesiveness of the mix.

Modules used: Vintage Tape → Equalizer → Vintage Limiter

Signature Greg Calbi Presets

With over 7,500 albums under his belt, Greg Calbi (Senior Mastering Engineer at Sterling Sound) is an accomplished mastering engineer like few others. Each of the presets is crafted to achieve a certain sonic goal, to be a solid starting point for mastering your material. Auditioning each preset at the beginning of your mastering session can be a great way to quickly sample different aesthetic possibilities and decide on the direction to take your master.

Four tips to remember when working with Presets

  1. Each preset in Ozone is crafted to achieve a certain sonic goal and to function as a solid starting point for mastering your material. Auditioning each preset at the beginning of your mastering session can be a great way to quickly sample different aesthetic possibilities and decide on the direction to take your master.

  2. These presets are intended as a starting point to get you going in the right direction. You could strike on just the right sound on the first try but it's rare that a preset will be perfect without some additional tweaks for your source material.

  3. It's important to experiment and to pay attention to how each preset is affecting your sound. Try turning a module off to learn how that particular piece fits into the signal chain. From there, you can make value judgements based on whether it's helping your sound or whether it's doing something that your track doesn't need.

  4. Try starting with a preset in the standalone version of Ozone and adding one of your other favorite plug-ins to the signal chain for another way to customize the presets within Ozone.
