The RX Post Producion Suite is comprised of four of our award-winning signal processing tools: RX 5 Advanced Audio Editor, RX Final Mix, RX Loudness Control, and Insight. In this blog post, we’ll look at a few of the different ways you can incorporate the suite into your Pro Tools workflow, and get started repairing audio instantly and producing better mixes right away.
When editing your audio, the most powerful features in the RX Post Production Suite are accessed through the RX 5 Advanced Audio Editor standalone application. You can open your audio files in there directly, but to help you easily move your audio between Pro Tools and RX, we’ve built RX Connect.
There are a few simple steps to make this functionality fit in seamlessly with your Pro Tools workflow:
With some audio devices, Pro Tools will have control of your audio drivers, so you wouldn’t able to hear the output of RX. However, we’ve built the RX Monitor tool to solve just this problem. Build a dedicated aux track for monitoring RX, and insert RX Monitor from the “Instrument” menu. Go to the “Preferences” menu in RX by clicking on the wrench icon in the top-right of the window. In the “Audio” tab, set your Driver type to be “RX Monitor.” Now we can hear the output of RX through your Pro Tools output chain.
Some engineers might choose to create duplicate playlists or separate tracks before making any repairs to their audio using RX Connect, but you can also “undo” these RX Connect changes just like any AudioSuite process.
If you make extensive repairs inside of RX, you can also save an RXDOC of the file, which will preserve all your adjustments so you can modify them later if you need to.
When it comes time to mix your project, the RX Post Production Suite includes 11 AAX- and RTAS-compatible plug-ins that offer top-shelf repair, enhancement, and metering right inside of Pro Tools. You’ll find real-time repair tools in the “Noise Reduction” drop-down menu.
RX 5 Audio Editor’s Dialogue De-noise module plug-in is designed specifically to function as a low-latency, real-time insert plug-in for broadband noise reduction that fits right into your mixing signal chain.
RX Final Mix is also included with the RX Post Production Suite. It is a high-performance insert plug-in that loads in either the “Equalizer” or “Dynamics” menus. When used with stems and buses, it provides dynamic EQ and limiting in one efficient package, with presets to help get you started quickly. A powerful meter can help navigate difficult challenges in the mix process. Our essential metering suite Insight is another insert-based tool found under the “Sound Field” menu.
Whenever you use RX Final Mix or Insight plug-ins as inserts on a multichannel audio file, make sure to select them from the Multichannel plug-in menu.
Insight can also monitor “Meter Taps” from any track or bus in your session; those appear in the “Other” menu. This feature allows you to meter multiple different sources in a single instance of Insight. For example: if you want to compare the Spectral Content of the music and dialogue busses in a Spectrogram, just insert Meter Taps on each bus, open an instance of Insight on your Master Output, and click the ‘“Meter Taps” button in the Spectrogram view. Now, you can select which Meter Taps you want to display, and assign them each a unique color.
When it comes time to deliver your mix for broadcast, the RX Post Production Suite includes RX Loudness Control—an offline AudioSuite plug-in that analyzes your entire mix and applies transparent signal processing to bring it within compliance for any of the international broadcast standards.
Simply select your printed mix and open RX Loudness Control from the “Dynamics” or “Sound Field” AudioSuite menus. Now you can analyze your entire mix, and process it to whatever broadcast standard or particular settings you need.
