In mastering, it can be helpful to compare the track we're working on with other successful tracks in the genre to get an idea of what our track should sound like. A master needs to have a clear focus and the mastering engineer and artist should work together to develop a clear, defined vision of how they want their product to sound like at the end of the mastering process. This is one place where reference tracks can be useful.
Mastering engineer and iZotope's Education Director Jonathan Wyner has created a Spotify playlist with some of his preferred reference tracks across a variety of genres. Within this playlist, you'll find dozens of great-sounding recordings from multiple genres that demonstrate excellent balance across the frequency response and a wide dynamic range.
This playlist was created as part of iZotope's Mastering Month, where user could learn about mastering through weekly webinars, videos, blog posts, and more. To learn more about creating balanced, dynamic masters, checkout the Mastering Month archives and dozens of tips, tutorials and videos from other esteemed mastering engineers like Greg Calbi, Adam Ayan, and more.
