To kick off the Latin GRAMMY Awards, iZotope visited the En La Mezcla ("In the Mix") celebration hosted by the Producers & Engineers Wing of The Recording Academy. This second-annual event, held at the beautiful Studio at the Palms in Las Vegas, acknowledged the achievements and contributions of a diverse group of Spanish-, Portuguese-, and English-speaking industry leaders.

Many of the most highly regarded engineers and producers in Latin music gathered here to share stories and discuss production techniques and ideology. iZotope shared unique mastering tips and discussed common issues for engineers with the help of GRAMMY Award-winning producer and audio engineer, Martin Nessi.

A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Martin has worked with GRAMMY Award-winning artists, engineered for Tony Maserati's Mirrorball Entertainment, and worked on soundtracks for films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

He has also engineered multiple GRAMMY Award-winning albums, including Alex Campos'Lenguaje de Amor (Best Christian Album Latin Grammy, 2011) and Ricky Martin's The Best Thing About Me Is You (Record of the Year Latin Grammy, 2011). He is currently engineering a new album for pop/rock singer Gloria Trevi.

Martin shared his mastering knowledge with the audience, including his methods for using Ozone 6 in his mastering workflow. He demonstrated ways to utilize multiband compression to beef up the low end of a mix and add more body and energy without losing transient punch. Turning to tools like Mid/Side multiband harmonic excitation, Martin shared ways to accentuate the sense of depth and stereo width in a mix, while still maintaining solid phase correlation to ensure mono compatibility.

Martin then discussed problems audio engineers commonly come across, and offered suggestions for tackling these problems in RX 4. Utilizing modules including Declip, Denoise, and Declick, Martin fixed problems like buzzing bass amps, clipped vocals, discontinuity pops caused by bad edit—and even undesired pick noise on a ukulele recording!

En La Mezcla "honors the hard work of engineers and producers in the Latin music community as well as current Latin GRAMMY nominees in the field of Production," says Maureen Droney, Managing Director of the P&E Wing. "We look forward to toasting their accomplishments at this reception along with celebrating the milestone anniversary of the 15th annual Latin GRAMMY Awards."
