The spectrum provides a real-time display of the audio's frequency content.
This display helps with EQ'ing and adjusting the band cutoffs for multiband dynamics
and distortion.
All of Trash's filtering and multiband modules display the spectrum in the background so you can visualize the effect your changes have on the audio signal easily. Note that you can control whether the spectrum displays the audio before or after each module processes by changing the processing order .
Spectrum Averaging
You can control how many seconds worth of audio the spectrum displays at once. In realtime mode the spectrum displays only the frequencies present in the audio you're hearing currently. In averaging mode, the spectrum will average the frequencies over some period and display them. You can change the averaging mode in the Spectrum Options tab .
If the spectrum is in averaging mode, you can reset its averaging by clicking on it.
Peak Hold
When you enable peak hold in the Spectrum Options tab, each point on the spectrum will display its current value and its peak, or highest, value. The peak values will reset after the peak hold time elapses. You can also reset the spectrum's peaks by clicking on the spectrum (see screenshot above).
Options
You can set all of the options for the spectrum by accessing the Spectrum Options tab or right-clicking (under OS X you can also ctrl-click) the spectrum and selecting "Spectrum Options" from the context menu.
